Transfer Credit Review

The Yale School of Nursing (YSN) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity in the transfer of credit process. All requests for transfer of credit must be submitted no later than 45 days prior to the beginning of the semester in which the course is offered. Incomplete applications, including those missing required information or attachments, will not be considered. A maximum of two courses may be transferred toward a YSN degree, ensuring that the majority of a student’s academic experience is grounded in the Yale curriculum. All transfer requests are subject to review by the YSN Transfer of Credit Committee, which evaluates each application to ensure it meets the rigorous standards set forth by YSN and its accrediting bodies. This policy reflects YSN’s commitment to providing a transparent, equitable, and rigorous transfer of credit process for its students.

Per YSN Transfer Credit Policy: 

For determination of transfer of credit, the prior coursework must demonstrate that the student has met the AACN Essential Competencies for that student’s plan of study.  

Only students in the MSN program are eligible to transfer credits. Transfer credits will not be accepted in the GEPN or DNP programs. PhD students should check with the University Registrar regarding Graduate School of Arts and Sciences policies. 

Once the credits are approved to be transferred in, on a student’s transcript it will indicate the approved courses from the accredited institution (up to two courses) with the credits, but no grade impacting their GPA at YSN. The courses will count towards the appropriate requirements in a student’s plan of study.

To be eligible for transfer credit toward courses for a Yale Nursing School degree, a course completed at another school must meet the following requirements:

1. The course must have been taken at an accredited institution.
2. The course must have been taken at the graduate or professional level.
3. The course must be taken prior to enrollment at Yale.
4. The student must have completed a baccalaureate degree before taking the course.
5. The course should be clearly relevant to the student’s program at the Nursing School.
6. The course must have been taken within the five years before matriculation at the Nursing School.
7. No more than two courses will be transferred in.
8. The minimum grade accepted for transfer credit is B or its equivalent.
9. A syllabus with objectives must be provided along with an official transcript.
10. Advanced Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, and Advanced Physical Assessment will only be accepted for transfer credit consideration if the courses were taken at nationally accredited advanced nursing programs.
