Not sure which direct-entry program is right for you?

Why the MN Program at YSN?

Sixteen months.
One Yale master’s.
A whole new career.

01

Launch a Yale-backed nursing career in just sixteen months.

Move efficiently from bachelor’s-prepared student to RN-ready graduate through a program designed to prepare you for the NCLEX-RN and the transition into professional nursing practice. The accelerated structure helps you spend less time out of the workforce and begin your nursing career sooner.

02

Earn a Yale master’s degree, not a second bachelor’s.

The MN recognizes the education and experience you already bring. Instead of returning for another undergraduate credential, you enter nursing through graduate-level study and earn a Yale master’s degree designed for your next professional chapter.

03

Preparing you for practice - and for what comes next.

The MN puts you in charge of your trajectory. You earn a Yale master’s and decide what comes next - whether that’s RN practice, teaching, or doctoral study in a DNP or PhD.

Frequently Asked Questions

What prospective students
want to know.

Will I be eligible to become a licensed RN?+
Yes. The MN is a pre-licensure graduate program. Graduates are prepared to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination and pursue licensure as registered nurses.
Is the program accredited?+
Yale School of Nursing’s programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). As a new program, the MN follows YSN’s established accreditation processes, and graduates will be prepared to sit for the NCLEX-RN and pursue RN licensure. We are happy to share the most current accreditation details with prospective students upon request.
Is the MN a standalone degree?+
Yes. Unlike many graduate-level direct-entry nursing programs, students are not required to continue into an advanced practice specialty in order to graduate. The program prepares graduates to sit for the NCLEX-RN and pursue licensure as registered nurses. It also provides excellent preparation for future doctoral studies (DNP or PhD) and opportunities for teaching or faculty roles.
How is the MN different from GEPN?+
Both pathways admit students with a non-nursing bachelor’s degree and include preparation for RN licensure. GEPN is designed for students who want to continue into nurse practitioner preparation over the course of a three-year program. The MN is designed for students whose goal is to become registered nurses via an efficient 16-month curriculum.
How is the MN different from an accelerated BSN?+
Accelerated BSN programs award a second bachelor’s degree. The Yale MN awards a master’s degree through graduate-level nursing study in 16 months.
Where will my clinical placements be?+
Clinical education will take place within YSN’s vast network of clinical and health system partners, with experiences across acute care, community, and other practice settings. Specific placement details are coordinated by a dedicated Clinical Support Unit that works to identify appropriate clinical opportunities for students.
What support will I have as a student?+
The MN is an intensive program, and you will not navigate it alone. Students are supported by faculty advisors, academic and learning resources, and the dedicated Clinical Support Unit that helps coordinate clinical placements. As part of Yale, you also have access to the university’s broader student services, including wellness, health, and accessibility resources, so you can focus on becoming the nurse you want to be.
Who is eligible to apply?+
A completed bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required, and no specific undergraduate major is needed. No prior nursing experience or background is necessary - the MN is designed for people entering nursing from other fields.
Do I need a science or healthcare background?+
No. The MN welcomes applicants from every academic and professional background, from the humanities and social sciences to business, the arts, and beyond. What matters most is your motivation to become a nurse and your readiness for graduate study. The only science-specific expectation is the set of prerequisite courses, which you can complete before enrolling regardless of your original field.
Are there prerequisite requirements?+

Applicants to the MN program are required to complete four prerequisite courses before beginning the program. Three of the prerequisites must have been completed at the time of application, and all four courses must be completed by a fixed deadline before the student’s first term begins.

The four required prerequisite courses are:

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology I with lab (4 credits). May complete one semester of Anatomy with lab as separate courses.
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology II with lab (4 credits). May complete one semester of Physiology with lab as a separate course.
  • General Chemistry with lab (4 credits)
  • Microbiology with lab (4 credits)

Please take note of the following requirements:

  • Three of the courses must be complete at the time of application with transcripts submitted, and all four courses must be completed before you begin the program.
  • All courses must be taken at an accredited college or university.
  • A cumulative grade of B (3.0) for all four courses is required.
  • Courses may be taken either in-person or online.
  • Courses must have been completed within the 8 years prior to application submission.
How do I apply?+

All applications to the MN program must be submitted through NursingCAS, the common application for nursing schools and programs.

The elements of a complete application include:

  • Completed NursingCAS application, including nonrefundable application fee
  • Current resume/CV
  • Three letters of recommendation submitted electronically through the application system
  • Official copies of transcripts for any postsecondary institutions attended, regardless of whether a degree was sought or obtained
  • A personal statement (the prompt is available in the application)
  • The Kira Talent Assessment, an asynchronous interview and written prompt
  • GRE score results are NOT required UNLESS cumulative GPA as calculated by NursingCAS in the bachelor’s degree was below 3.0

Note that only complete applications will be reviewed by the admissions committee. Applicants should allow enough time for official transcripts to arrive by the appropriate deadline. The application for Spring 2027 admission will open on August 6, 2026, with a priority deadline of November 1, 2026.

What is the Kira Talent Assessment?+
The Kira Talent Assessment is an asynchronous video interview that is part of the MN application. After you submit your application, you will receive login details for Kira Talent from YSN. The assessment takes approximately 25-30 minutes to complete and includes both written responses and recorded video answers to a series of questions, which you complete on your own schedule rather than in a live, scheduled interview.
Can international students apply?+

Yes. We welcome applications from around the world. Some application requirements differ for international applicants:

  • Anyone whose native or first language is not English, and who has not completed four years of undergraduate education at an institution where English is the primary language of instruction, must submit official TOEFL or IELTS scores to NursingCAS.
  • For any coursework completed outside the United States or Canada, a TEC (formerly SpanTran) or WES credential evaluation is required.

International applicants are considered for institutional scholarship support on the same basis as domestic applicants.

What does the program cost, and is funding available?+
Current tuition and fee information is available on the YSN Tuition and Fees page. All applicants are considered for merit- and need-based institutional scholarships as part of the application for admission, and those awarded support are notified at the time of admission. More than 80% of YSN students receive some form of scholarship support from the school. For more on aid options, see the YSN financial aid page. Select students may also be eligible for the Joanne and William Conway Nursing Scholarship, a competitive award for those prepared to commit to a developing direct pathway from the MN to a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Education. Details and application information will be shared with enrolling students.
Can I talk with someone in admissions?+
Yes. The admissions team is here to support you throughout the process. You can email the team at ysn.admissions@yale.edu or join the interest list to receive invitations to information sessions and application workshops.
