Eligibility and Requirements

Requirements that apply to all concentrations

These rules hold across all concentrations. Keep them in mind as you plan your application.

Stay in good standing

You must be making satisfactory progress in your specialty program to apply. If you do not pass a first semester course, you cannot be accepted into a concentration for the following year.

Acceptance is confirmed mid year

You are notified after demonstrating satisfactory progress: in the fall semester for November 15 deadlines, and in the spring semester for April 1 deadlines.

Get advisor approval

Every concentration requires sign off from your advisor, so discuss your plans with them early and make sure they know the academic requirements for your chosen concentration.

Review the applicable deadline

Each concentration closes on either November 15 or April 1. The cards below are color coded, gold for November 15 and blue for April 1.

Application Process

How to apply for a concentration

The concentration application is internal to YSN and separate from your original application to the school. The process includes the following steps.

1

Check eligibility and timing

Find your concentration above, then note its deadline, when it runs, and any academic requirements so you know you qualify.

2

Talk with your advisor

You will need your advisor's approval, so discuss your plan early and confirm the concentration fits your program of study.

3

Complete the internal form

Submit the YSN concentration application, which includes short essay questions about your interest in the concentration.

4

Submit by your deadline

Apply by November 15 or April 1, depending on the concentration. Your acceptance is confirmed once you show satisfactory progress.

Additional Information

Costs, aid, and enrollment details

A few practical details about applying, cost, and what to expect.

How to apply

Complete an internal YSN application form that includes short essay questions about your interest in the concentration, then obtain approval from your academic advisor.

What it costs

Enrolling in a concentration adds tuition equal to four credits at the YSN per credit rate. For students who begin a concentration in fall 2026 or spring 2027, the cost is $8,700 (four credits at $2,175). For students who begin in fall 2027 or later, the cost will be incrementally higher, based on the per credit rate set for that year. Visit the tuition and fees page for the most current figures.

Financial aid applies

Yes. Your financial aid package can be adjusted so the additional tuition is included in your cost of attendance.

Admission is selective

Concentrations may have capacity limits, so admission is not guaranteed. Most also include clinical or experiential requirements that vary by program.

When you take courses

Depending on the concentration, coursework may begin as early as the spring of your first specialty year. Some concentrations have coursework only in the final year of the MSN.

Questions?

Contact the concentration coordinator listed on each card for curriculum details, or reach Dr. Elizabeth Doyle with questions about the application itself.
